Weekly SMM Digest: May 5–9, 2025

Let’s take a look at the biggest social media updates and trends this week, and how you can use them to grow your small business online.

📅 Threads Launches Video Ads (Test)

Threads is testing video ads in the main feed. Ads will look like regular posts but be short videos (9:16 or square). Only a few brands can use it now, but more will get access soon.

How to use this for your business:

  • Start making short vertical videos for your products or services.
  • When ads become available, you’ll be ready to run simple, engaging video campaigns.
  • Great for promoting offers, testimonials, or behind-the-scenes clips.

📅 Account Status Dashboard in Threads

Threads added a new dashboard where you can see if your account has any violations or limits. This helps you understand what’s happening if your posts are hidden or your reach goes down.

How this helps small businesses:

  • You get more control and transparency.
  • If something goes wrong with your content, you’ll know why.
  • No more guessing why your post didn’t perform well.

📅 Facebook & Instagram: New Creator Ads

Meta now allows more ad types:

  • Collaborative Lives on Facebook with shared ads. Facebook is breathing new life into live streams by bringing back Partnership Ads. Now, brands can officially jump into the live action. Whether it’s a product launch or Q&A, businesses can team up with creators mid-stream and turn those real-time moments into real sales. It’s not just watching anymore, it’s selling live.
  • Ads next to popular Reels from creators. Meta is testing a new ad placement called “Trending Reels Ads”, which allows brands to place their advertisements adjacent to the most popular and engaging Reels created by users. This initiative aims to help advertisers tap into trending content and reach wider audiences.

How to use this:

  • Partner with content creators (even micro-influencers) in your niche.
  • Your brand can appear next to high-performing content.
  • Better reach without needing a huge budget.

1. AI-Generated Content Is Growing

Over 70% of marketers now use AI to help with writing, visuals, and video creation.

How to use this:

  • Use AI tools to write post ideas, captions, or generate quick designs.
  • Saves time, especially if you do marketing yourself.

2. Short Videos Still Win

TikTok, Instagram Reels, and YouTube Shorts are the best for visibility and engagement.

How to use this:

  • Make simple videos: show your product in action, record tips, or answer common questions.
  • Even 15 seconds is enough to connect with your audience.

3. Authenticity Matters More Than Ever

93% of people say brands should understand online culture. Being “real” and staying updated with trends helps your business feel more human.

How to use this:

  • Use memes, trending audios, or natural language in your posts.
  • Don’t worry about being perfect, focus on being relatable.

4. Live Shopping and Social Sales Are Rising

More brands are selling directly through live videos on TikTok and Instagram.

How to try it:

  • Go live once a week with a product demo or offer.
  • Add product links or promo codes to your live session.

5. Micro-Influencers Are the New Power

Small creators (under 10K followers) now give better engagement and trust.

Smart move:

  • Partner with 1–2 small creators in your local area or niche.
  • It’s more affordable and often more effective than big names.

Social media is moving fast, but that’s a good thing. Each new update gives small businesses new ways to reach people, even with a small budget. Start small, test often, and stay real.
